Monday 23rd October 2017 at Bury St Edmunds Golf Club

This was an away fixture for the GCMA East Anglia Managers, and always a fixture everyone is looking out for.

This did show as the Suffolk Captains’ had 68 members going for 16 places. Not too much for the Golf Club managers filling their team with a mixture of serving and non-serving secretaries.

The fixture was held at Bury St Edmunds and much praise was had of a course in great condition with catering to match.

Our newly elected Captain Bob Tawell was unfortunately otherwise engaged and Mike Verhelst, General Manager at Bury St Edmunds was asked to stand in as Captain for the Day. This very important position was only bestowed upon him as long as he could pick a winning team.

To the matches:

Brig Archer & James Douglas-Hamilton v Mike Verhelst & Neil Ellice GCMA won 3&2
Robbie Adams & Chris Briggs v Brian Lever & Scott Ballentine GCMA won 3&2
Brian Kemp & Alex Giddens v Ray Baines & Mike Devlin GCMA Lost 4&2
Chris Pearson & Joseph Maloney v Gary Smith & Iain Evans GCMA won 3&1
Keith Ribbans & Murray Staines v David Kelly & Charlie Wilderspin GCMA won 2 up
Paul Gray & Dennis Driver v Jim Wiggam & Robert Cooper GCMA won 1 up
Steve Finch & Dave Hornsby v Kyle Hanvey & Peter Keeble GCMA lost 3&2
Keith Cresswell & Richard Nichols v Michael Estcourt & Malcolm Slatter GCMA lost 4&3

This means that the GCMA East Anglia retains the trophy by 5 games to 3.

A first win for our newly elected Captain Bob Tawell and the hope of many more to come.

A big thank you to Gary Smith, John Sayer and Paddy Lockwood.

Match Report

Wellingborough Golf Club – Thursday 7th September 2017

This fixture is always hard, with a very good East Midlands side, we knew what we were up against.

I have to start by saying “What a Venue”. We were treated to a fantastic brunch in a beautiful Harrowden Hall. Grandeur and opulence spring to mind. The course was of the same ilk, so no excuses, or……

We were lucky with the weather and play commenced at 12 noon.

7 matches, 14 aside battle took place with Captain and Regional manager in waiting taking the lead match. Unfortunately Judy Barker our current Captain had a prior engagement so was not able to lead the troops.

Some great golf was played on an equally well maintained course, but could our Captain in waiting bring home the bacon?

As a certain golfing term says, we got a good beating, losing the first match 6&5, not the best of starts. In the end all we can say is that we enjoyed the lovely food and surroundings.
The results East Midlands
A.Marriott & K. Wilcox – B.Tawell & G Smith won 6&5
P.Thornton & M Davis – M.Verhelst & B.Lever Lost 3 down
G.Hyde & M.Mulhern – N.Ellice & B.Tawell won 3&1
A.Thompson & D.Dalby – C.Wilderspin & B.Cooper won 3&1
R.Savage & S.Last – M.Devlin & J.Sayer won 4&3
D.Foley & P.Henry – G.MacLeod & E.Thompson lost 2&1
R.Beckett & J.Harris – P.Keeble & M.Slatter won 6&5

As you can see a deserved win for our East Midlands opposition. Congratulations to them.

Next for us will be the autumn meeting at Rushmere. Please support the GCMA East Anglia and join us at the autumn meeting

Monday 21st August 2017

Venue: Stevenage Golf Club

On a rather cloudy day on could be forgiven thinking it was autumn, however, the weather improved nicely for our match against Chiltern and Home Counties.

We did not know what to expect from Stevenage Golf Club, a municipal golf course, and very well presented indeed.

We all loved the course and were very well looked after for our lunch and dinner in the evening. The food was truly magnificent so a big thank you to all the staff at Stevenage Golf Club
What about the match you think, we know that Chiltern only play 3 matches each year and won 2 of them so far, could they do it and have a clean sweep.

As to the matches
Judy Barker & Neil Sjoberg - Steve Derbyshire & Nikki Hunter Match Halved
Mike Verhelst & Brian Lever - William & Derek GCMA win
Kyle Hanvey & Bob Cooper - Chris Murray & Richard Hall Chiltern win
Peter Keeble & Scott Ballentine - Andrew Nicholson & Clive Bailey GCMA win
Bill Beckett & Malcolm Slatter - Peter Marshall & Tony Welch Chiltern win
Gary Smith & John Sayer - Brian Thompson & Ray Chiltern win

Chiltern & Home Counties win 3½ - 2½

As you see a very tight affair but a great clean sweep for Chiltern & Home Counties. Always played in Great Spirit with good banter!

Orsett Golf Club Tuesday 25th July

This annual event seems to go from strength to strength. This year was no different with a field of over 60 people playing on a nice sunny and absolutely maintained course.

Richard Herring, manager secretary at Orsett Golf Club showcased how lucky the members are, course, food and the organisation were second to none. Please pass on our gratitude to your committee and members for use of all the facilities.

Played in warm sunshine and for the Guest Day trophy 30 pairs started at 13.00. The weather seemed to get warmer as it went on.

Nearest the pin on the 12th for men and ladies was won by Judy Barker and Richard Herring, with Richard hitting his shot to within an inch from the pin.

The longest drive was on the 18th and the ladies longest drive was won by Julie Ruscoe from Colchester, and the longest drive for the men was won again by Richard Herring. Playing on his home course definitely must have helped.

The scores on the day were very high especially of 10% for a betterball competition

In 3rd Place with a great score of 45 points and on countback Matthew Bowman & John Steele from Ely Golf Club.

In 2nd Place was Bob Tawell and Dick Foord from Rushmere Golf Club with 46 points.

In 1st Place Richard Herring and Andy Lee from Orsett Golf Club with a massive 48 points.

A big Thank to John Sayer, Gary Smith and Judy Barker for the fantastic organisation of this Guest Day.

And last but definitely not least a big thank you to our sponsors Philip Vince Majestic Crystal and Club Systems
